The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) successfully conducted an underwater assessment of the proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Barangays Santa Felomina and San Antonio from July 27 to 31, 2026, as part of its continuing efforts to support the conservation and sustainable management of coastal and marine resources in the Municipality of Cateel.
The five-day assessment involved the evaluation of the ecological condition of the identified marine sites to determine their suitability for designation as Marine Protected Areas. The activity gathered scientific data that will serve as a basis for future conservation planning and resource management initiatives in the municipality.
Following the completion of the assessment, the BFAR team paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the Municipal Mayor, where they were welcomed by Executive Assistant Michael Rosalia on behalf of Municipal Mayor Hon. Emilou C. Nuรฑez. During the meeting, BFAR presented the initial results of the underwater assessment and shared its recommendations to further strengthen the protection and sustainable management of the municipality’s coastal ecosystems.
The BFAR representatives also met with the Municipal Agriculture Office, headed by Municipal Agriculturist Ildefonsa Reyes, to discuss the assessment findings and explore collaborative efforts in implementing appropriate measures for marine biodiversity conservation and fisheries resource management.
The Municipality of Cateel remains steadfast in supporting initiatives that advance environmental sustainability and strengthen partnerships with national government agencies in preserving the municipality’s rich coastal and marine ecosystems.
